"Free To Good Home" - Candice Collins, Hopeful Homer

It sends chills down my spine each and every time I see an advert online or in the printed classifieds with this heading.

Yes it is a quick way of finding a home for a pet, I mean who doesn't love give-aways? What a bargain! No, a bargain is something you would label an inanimate object with if bought cheaply! A pet is not something to just give to the first person that calls to respond to an advert you placed.

I recently rescued a young Jack Russell who was also "Free to a good home" because he had become an inconvenience to his owner and they where now looking for a home urgently or he would be taken to the SPCA. So I called the owner and without asking me where I lived or what animals I owned or had experience with, the owner told me straight away i could come and fetch the dog. She had no idea where he was going or who he was going to but she could not wait to get him out the door.

If you loved or cared about your pet would you not want to be assured they are going to a loving home?

Too many people are giving their pets away without doing home checks, most not even thinking of the places their pets may end up.

There are puppy mills and backyard breeders who are always on the prowl for free dogs to add to their horrific breeding programs.
There are people who take on free dogs as pets but cannot afford to keep them well fed and healthy.
There are people who abuse their animals.
There are people who get dogs for fighting.
There are people who use dogs as bait for training fighting dogs.

The list of sick individuals is endless and due to peoples ignorance their beloved pets end up feeding these circles of abuse and neglect.
